Prescription Charges

NHS prescription charges

From 1st April 2009, the prescription charge per item is £7.20. Pre-payment certificates are also available and patients who have to pay for more than 4 prescription items in 3 months or 14 items in 12 months may find it cheaper than pay-as-you-go. Importantly, some patients can get free prescriptions and you should check leaflet HC11 to see if you could get free prescriptions before buying a pre-payment certificate.

Details of the current prescription charge and pre-payment certificate costs are available in leaflet HC12 - Charges and optical voucher values.

You can buy a pre-payment certificate online, by post or by phone. Ring 0845 850 0030 to buy over the phone using your credit or debit card. A 12 month certificate can be purchased using a 10 month direct debit instalment payment. Visit the Pricing Prescription Division website for more information or to download the form to buy by cheque or postal order, or buy online
