What is the Travel Clinic?

We aim to:

  • Promote good health to travellers while abroad and advise on the potential risks to safety
  • Provide up to date and relevant advice in all areas of travel risk
  • Carry out a full risk assessment in relation to area of travel and expected activities
  • Establish individual requirements and complete any vaccination schedules required

Why do I need to have travel vaccinations?

Injections and tablets can help your body to provide antibodies to infections you are less likely to come into contact  within the UK.

What do I need to do?

  1. Complete and return a travel questionnaire 4-6 weeks before your travel departure date, if you have received vaccinations outside of the practice please include this information. Travel Questionnaire
  2. Contact reception 72 hours after completing the questionnaire to be informed if an appointment is required with the Practice Nurse, when this appointment is required and the likely costs of any vaccines indicated.
  3. Make an appointment with reception for a 20 minute consultation with the Practice Nurse in the Travel Clinic. Please bring with you any documentation regarding your trip and any previous vaccination records.
  4. Any vaccines incurring a charge will need to be paid for prior to administration. You can pay by cash, cheque, debit or credit card at the dispensary.
  5. The Nurse will plan with you a vaccination schedule and a written documentation booklet will be given for you to maintain a completed record.
  6. Some vaccinations need to be ordered in and will not be immediately available, these will be individually priced when ordered.
  7. Malaria prophylaxis will be discussed with you and ordered for your collection at the dispensary if required.

Tips when Travelling Abroad

For up to date tips when travelling abroad, visit the Fit For Travel Website. This is a public access website provided by the NHS (Scotland). It gives travel health information for people travelling abroad from the UK.

The EHIC website is also another handy source of information that explains how to apply for a European Health Insurance Card. This card can be used to cover any necessary medical treatment due to either an accident or illness within the European Economic Area (EEA). The EHIC entitles the holder to state-provided medical treatment within the country they are visiting and the service provided will be the same as received by a person covered by the country's 'insured' medical scheme.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website can keep you up to date about the risks involved in visiting other countries. Visit http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/

Please be aware that even though you may have received all the appropriate medications and followed all the guidance, you may still become unwell. We suggest that you seek early medical attention if you get a fever, have gastric problems or feel unwell in the weeks or months following your trip.
